What is Complex Cataract Surgery?

A cataract develops when the natural crystalline lens in the eye becomes cloudy. This is generally due to ageing. The only treatment for cataracts is to remove them surgically with cataract surgery.

However very often other factors may make the surgery much more complicated. However, other factors often make the surgery more complicated. Cataract surgery is a type of lens replacement surgery. Factors which make cataract surgery and its outcome complicated include:

  • Very high prescriptions
  • Glaucoma or related conditions such as narrow-angle or pseudoexfoliation
  • Diabetes
  • Corneal conditions, such as keratoconus and corneal dystrophies
  • Uveitis
  • Previous trauma
  • Previous eye surgery
  • Use of particular medications (Doxazosin, Tamsulosin or Warfarin)

FAQs

    This will depend on the complexity of your cataract and the choice of synthetic lens implanted in your eye. Use of a Trifocal Advance Technology Lens generally reduces the dependence on glasses. However this is usually not the best option in all complex cataracts.

    During your consultation, Mr. Ayoub will discuss the various lens options available to you and advice you on their suitability to your eye.

    The surgery is generally pain free as anaesthesia is used to numb the eye.

    Yes it is possible. However for some complex cataracts, it is generally advisable to have the two eyes done on separate days.

    Generally most people are ready to return to work/general day-to-day activities 3 days after surgery. However, heavy lifting and strenuous activity should be avoided for 2 weeks after surgery.
